Preparing your children for Halloween is extremely important. We want the experience to be fun and memorable. Halloween can pose many sensory and other challenges for children with Autism and other Developmental Disabilities.
Able2learn has created Halloween Cards to help your child have a great experience. These adorable non-verbal Trick or Treat Cards can be used by anyone.
To prepare your child for Halloween we offer the following tips:
1. Practice the steps of Halloween a few times before the actual day. This can be done verbally and through visual aids. See our Halloween sequencing book.
2. Some children may experience sensory issues or maybe confused as to what they want to dress up for Halloween. Choose the costume well in advance of Halloween. Practice wearing the costume. Have your child be comfortable.
3. Practice Trick or Treating. This can be done by play acting. If required you can use our cute Non-Verbal Halloween Cards to enhance your child's experience.
4. Having a bag full of Halloween Treats may not be the ideal end result. Your child may have dietary restrictions. The idea of having a child full of sugar for the next month may not appeal to you. We have a few recommendations. Have a bag prepared of Treats to switch bags when he/she is not looking. Visit neighbours in advance, and give them treats to give to your child. These can consist of small toys, peanut free, gluten and casein free treats.
5. Try to make the night as comfortable as possible. You may want to bring ear plugs or headphones when there is sensory overload. There maybe an option of creating identifying a place where a time out can be taken by the child. Bring a sensory toy, token boards, and rewards if required. The idea is to tailor the night to your child, to make the experience as beautiful as possible.
I hope your child enjoys his/her night.
