Able2learn has created Break Flashcards ( 2.8 inches x 2.1 inches) for your student. The cards are visual reminder. There are many ways to use these cards.
1. Student hands in a card when a break is requested. This can be used to help a student request a break when he/she is feeling overwhelmed. Teach your student to understand when they are feeling overwhelmed and require time alone.
2. Break Cards can be paired with options to take a break. Teach your student to request a break and, decide what kind of a break they would like to have at that time. The student can have an option to be in a quiet room, play a game, listen to music, jump on the trampoline or bounce a ball.
3. Break cards can be used to control escape behaviour. If your student is not staying on task by requesting to leave all the time, a limited number of break cards can be given to the student.
This strategy was effective for my child who used to escape to the bathroom during language arts.

Great resource with lots of options so the student could choose which one they wanted to use.
