We made this book in simple sentences and pictures to allow Niam to learn the rules of a restaurant to eventually be independent. If you are teaching independence, I want to share this experience with you. I told the concigere of restaurant Niam was coming to ask to be sit down. The problem was they did not wait for him to line up , wait for his turn, and they did not wait for him to ask for a seat or even take his order. They sat him down and knew he wanted cheese pizza and French fries. The problem is the program to teach independence does not work if the people do not understand Autism and are not willing to accommodate by waiting with patience. I did it once and did not do it again. But this does not mean we should not teach skills, we should always teach life skills. We just have to find places that are willing to accommodate our children to allow them the opportunity to learn. And never underestimate the ability of a person with autism. They are capable of learning and being independent.
Learning Life Skills and appropriate behaviour is very important for our children. Some of you have written in and asked for a social story on kissing at school. My own son was used to kissing his therapists and teachers. When he was little it was cute and everyone loved it. As he grew older the habit became inappropriate. Other children may not know who they can kiss and when. Social skills and behaviour protocols we take for granted can be difficult for our children and they need to be taught. Hope your child enjoys this social story.
Don't forget to check out Niam's beautiful artwork at www.niamjain.com. He is an accomplished artist. Watch his story and know anything and everything is possible. His story will inspire your.

This social story was very helpful for my client. He is practicing how to go to a restaurant and how to order a meal.
